Does Your Skin Have the Winter Blues?

shutterstock_233840110There’s so much to enjoy during the winter months:  Brisk walks through the cool air, skating on frozen ponds and making snowmen in the gently swirling snow. It’s a magical winter wonderland that just begs you to snuggle up in front of a warm fire, with a cozy blanket and a hot cup of cocoa. While wintry scenes might bring holiday songs to mind, when it comes to your skin, the beauty of winter is anything but harmonious.

Your skin is the largest (and most unprotected) organ of your body. It needs extra TLC every day to preserve and shelter it from the environmental damage that’s all too common during colder months. If your delicate skin is suffering from winter’s woes, there are ways that daily moisturizing, along with a few tips, can replenish it’s soft, healthy glow:

1. Proactively Preserve

Before your wintry vacation, apply moisturizer twice a day. Pay special attention to parts of your body that will be exposed, and more likely damaged by the bitterly cold, dry air. Also, when delicate skin is exposed to cold temperatures, blood circulation in the smallest blood vessels becomes restricted. You can improve circulation, promoting healthier skin, by applying a good quality moisturizer.

2. Prevent and Treat

Ever notice how your skin feels driest in the wintertime? Lack of moisture in the air, worsened by turning up the heat on your thermostat, can leave your skin feeling like sandpaper. Along with applying a rich moisturizer, one of the best secrets to combatting wintry dried skin is adding moisture to the air.  By regularly using a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep, your skin can regain lost moisture.

If you’re suffering from a sniffle, that extra humidity will also help and adding a generous amount of moisturizer around the nostrils will prevent chapping caused by frequent tissue use. You can also prevent dry skin with a simple change to your nightly beauty regime. Skip the water when cleansing your face, which can dry your skin out even more. Instead, opt for a gentle facial cleanser and a washcloth to sweep the day’s impurities from your face.

3. Protect and Heal

While humidity in the air does wonders for your skin, getting your skin wet has the opposite effect. When you can, avoid washing your hands with soap and water and reach for a non-alcohol, moisturizing hand sanitizer instead.

To combat and heal dry hands, regularly apply a rich moisturizer 3 to 4 times a day to rehydrate your skin and create a protective barrier from the damaging, cold conditions outside.

Ultherapy® for a Non-Surgical Facelift

Ultherapy® Results Before and After PhotosFine lines, wrinkles, and facial sagging are visible signs of aging that many men and women seek to hide or correct. In the past, there were only two options for facial correction: permanent, invasive facelifts or temporary, non-surgical fillers. These left many patients with procedures that didn’t meet all of their wants and needs. However, modern technology has created a new spectrum of facial correction. In the middle of this spectrum is Ultherapy®, which combines the best benefits of surgical facelifts and non-surgical treatments without the drawbacks.

What Is Ultherapy®

Ultherapy® is an energy based treatment unlike many others on the market. While other technologies that correct surface wrinkles affect the outer layers of the skin, Ultherapy® works in the deep tissues for long-term results. It uses concentrated ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the deep tissues. Over time, this new tissue production tightens sagging skin and smooths wrinkles.

Ultherapy® vs. Facelift Surgery

Traditionally, patients who sought to correct sagging facial skin would have to undergo invasive surgical facelifts. These procedures trimmed away sagging skin, tightened the muscles, and required long recovery periods. Patients who don’t have sagging caused by muscle drooping often don’t want to undergo an invasive procedure. Ultherapy®, on the other hand, provides patients with extensive skin tightening without making a single incision in the skin. There is minimal to no downtime, and the results rival those of a facelift.

Ultherapy® vs. Facial Fillers

Patients often choose facial fillers because these treatments don’t require incisions or extensive recovery periods. In many cases, fillers can restore volume loss in a way that facelift surgery cannot. Filler treatments are customized to provide correction to each patient’s trouble areas. However, the results of facial fillers are often short-lived; routine treatments will be needed to maintain the results you desire.

Ultherapy® has all the same benefits as facial fillers; it’s a non-surgical treatment with no recovery period, and it can help restore lost facial volume. However, Ultherapy® is designed to stimulate collagen production for long-lasting results. Once you have completed a series of Ultherapy® treatments, your results will last for years.

Ultherapy® Candidates

While Ultherapy® can provide correction for many individuals, not every patient is a candidate for treatment. You should be in good health, and your facial sagging should be the result of sagging facial skin, not facial muscles. Patients with muscle sagging would be better suited for a facelift to provide them with the more extensive correction they need. A consultation with the doctors of Southwest Plastic Surgery will help you decide which treatment would be best for you.

How to Have a Younger Looking Chest

If you enjoy low necklines and cleavage-baring dresses – you understand how important it is to take care of the skin on your chest. After all, this area of sensitive skin can easily become the source of criticism if it isn’t well cared for before you don that plunging neckline.

Fighting the Signs of Aging and Sun Damage

When it comes to moisturizing masks, sun protection, and age-fighting serums, your face isn’t the only area that needs attention. You should spend just as much time on areas that might not get as much exposure. Namely, your chest.

Your upper chest may be one of the first areas that skin shows signs of sun damage or age – especially if you haven’t been taking care of it. If you aren’t too careful, you might see the impact of age before you even think it’s a possibility. Now is the time to take action!

Thinning Skin is Normal

The skin around women’s chests gets thinner as they age. It also loses elasticity. With sun exposure, we can see the development of age spots, darkening of the skin, and wrinkles. If you smoke or are in the sun more than you ought to be, you’ll see the impact even sooner – especially if you have a fair skin tone. People with darker skin pigments usually see less damage. That’s why it’s so important to use sun protection and skin care products before the problems even start.

But what if you already see damage that can’t be prevented? Some products promise anti-aging properties, but they aren’t as effective on the chest due to the way the skin on the chest differs from the skin on the face. Fortunately, there are still a few other options.

While it’s best to prevent problems before they start, some problems can be addressed after the fact. Even if you cover yourself with clothing, the chest may still develop some symptoms of sun exposure. Here are some other things that you need to keep in mind for caring for the delicate skin on your chest:

Of course, if you aren’t already using a daily sunscreen or a moisturizer that contains SPF, it’s time to implement it into your routine. When used daily, it’s easier to maintain and prevent additional issues from popping up (or at least delay them.) Take care to use them year-round, even when you’re wearing a sweater during the winter. Your skin will thank you in the spring!

Extending The Life of Your Dermal Filler with BOTOX® Cosmetic

shutterstock_331085210When it comes to enhancing the youthful look of your face, chemodenervation – the temporary paralysis of facial muscles –  is the number one procedure requested in the United States. After motion-limiting BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, the second-most popular option is a dermal filler injection, to add sculpted volume beneath the surface of the skin.

Recently, a study was performed by Dr. Ismail Kucuker in Samsun, Turkey to find out whether BOTOX® Cosmetic injections prolonged the results of dermal fillers and the answer was an exciting yes!

Understanding The Benefits of Dermal Fillers

When patients place their appearance and self-confidence in the hands of a skilled plastic surgeon, many find they want an added safety-net, just in case the results aren’t quite what they had in mind. For that reason, hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are the most popular choice for adding volume to a sagging, aged appearance.

HA fillers dissipate over time, which may not sound like a good thing, until you consider that the result can be easily reversed, should you be dissatisfied with the outcome. If the look you’ve achieved isn’t quite what you had in mind, a simple injection of hyaluronidase can dissipate the filler, reducing the volume and result. Because HA fillers are reversible and last as long as 1-2 years before retreatment is needed, they’re often the preferred, economical choice for both patients and cosmetic doctors.

How BOTOX® Cosmetic Helps Your Enhancement Last Longer

Simply, it was found that constant motion and movement of the skin encourages the natural breakdown of dermal fillers. If the movement of the face is strategically limited with BOTOX® Cosmetic, then the dermal fillers will not dissipate as quickly and their effects can be significantly extended.

Results showed that with BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal filler degradation could be decreased by 42% and 50% greater filler volume remained. That’s definitely good news for your extending your youthful enhancement and your cosmetic budget.

How Can You Benefit From Combination Cosmetic Injections?

Combination treatments are commonly used already. Many patients and cosmetic surgeons find that BOTOX® Cosmetic prolongs the enhanced effect when compared to using dermal fillers, alone. Because your face is dynamic and constantly in motion, it’s understandable that dermal fillers break down and reabsorb more quickly than areas with less motion, such as the breast or buttocks.

While the study is promising, not all areas of the face can potentially benefit from combination cosmetic injections. While you might enjoy a fuller lip area, lack of lip movement resulting from BOTOX® Cosmetic injections wouldn’t be appealing. Areas where temporary paralysis aren’t desirable won’t benefit from dual cosmetic injections. Instead, cosmetic issues such as crow’s feet or forehead wrinkles would most profit from muscle-limiting, volumizing combination injections.

If You’re Considering Refreshing Enhancements…

…it’s important to consult with a skilled cosmetic doctor who stays up-to-date on the latest advancements in cosmetic techniques and approaches. You’ll find that the surgeons at Southwest Plastic Surgery do just that, providing superior results for patients just like you. If you’re interested in learning about which cosmetic options would benefit you most, call today to speak to one of our specialist, and then come see us at our El Paso office!

Are Winter Woes Drying Out Your Skin?

shutterstock_101108329The winter blues might have you dreaming of tropical places, but if your skin is beginning to look like the Sahara Desert, it’s time for some intervention. Baby, it’s cold outside… and it’s only natural for you to crank up the heat or indulge in a piping-hot soak in the bathtub. Not to mention washing your hands every few minutes so you won’t catch what’s going around at the office. So what’s a girl to do when the cold weather has sapped the moisture from your skin?

    1. Up Your Water Intake – While a soak in the tub and frequent hand washing actually rob your skin of moisture; drinking more water can have the opposite effect. Replenish your skin’s moisture from the inside out, to avoid skin that resembles sandpaper. Not only will your skin look healthier and soft, it’ll also plump up those fine lines on your face. And who doesn’t want less wrinkles?
    2. Prevent Moisture Loss – You can keep your skin from losing moisture, by sealing it in with a rich, creamy lotion. Skip the tub and opt for a quick shower, then while you’re still damp, slather on your moisturizing oils or lotion of choice. Slip, quite literally, into your clothes and enjoy a smoother day.
    3. Rethink Washing Your Face – Cleansing your face each day, with water, can really sap the moisture from your skin.  Sure, it washes away makeup and impurities, but it also washes away those beneficial oils that act as a moisture barrier for your face. Instead, skip the soap (it can make dry skin even drier) and opt for a pH-balanced cleanser that’s aimed specifically for your type of skin.
    4. Humidity Is Your Friend – When the temps outside plummet, you naturally raise your thermostat to keep your indoors warm and comfortably toasty.  All that warm air feels delicious, but it’s also skin-damagingly dry. With the help of a humidifier, you can add moisture back into the air. Show your skin a little love and place a humidifier in rooms that you frequently use.  Most especially, take it to bed with you.  Not literally, but place it in your room so that your skin can drink in that extra moisture while you sleep.
    5. Fat Is Your Friend – If you were looking for a good excuse to indulge in your favorite healthy-fat foods, here it is! Monounsaturated fat plays an important role in keeping your skin glowingly hydrated. So enjoy a healthy helping of guacamole – that avocado will do wonders for your dry skin. Replace your regular dressing with olive oil, for some additional moisture benefits. When it comes to snacking, reach for the macadamia nuts, almonds and peanut butter. They’ll satisfy your skin and your cravings.
    6. Get Your Daily Dose of Vitamin E – If you’re low on Vitamin E, “the skin vitamin”, it shows. Your skin can look dull, dry and drab, but with a daily dose of Vitamin E, you can revitalize your skin, restoring its moisture. If you want to skip an over-the-counter vitamin and go straight to nature for your source, you’ll find Vitamin E in olives, sunflower seeds, peanuts, almonds, wheat germ and leafy green vegetables.

Lip Injectables: What You Need to Know

Juvederm Before and AfterGorgeous, full lips can add beauty and youth to your appearance. But when cosmetic treatment goes too far – it can be a nightmare. You want people to notice you for your glowing smile instead of “duck lips.”

If you weren’t born with naturally fuller lips, or they have lost volume over the years – that’s ok. Having the right provider for your lip augmentation procedure is essential, because the process is a work of art.

Not only does the specific procedure impact your results, but so does your natural facial contour. Trying to force something that isn’t right for your specific needs can give you the “duck lips” that you’ve been dreading. You also don’t want to go to the other extreme of filling the lips so much that you have what is often referred to as “trout mouth.”

Beautiful Lip Injections Do Exist

Although the media is great at publicizing women with horrible lip augmentation or filler treatments, you seldom see them talking about the ones that look great. Why? Because their treatment was done correctly! It’s important to not just treat one area of your face. The various zones around your smile and throughout different parts of your lips impact which steps are most appropriate to take – giving you the natural looking results that you desire.

Women often lose volume throughout their lips as they age, making them appear very thin. It’s no wonder why so many women are now having lip injectable procedures and augmentation performed. Just remember: one size does not fit all.

You need a trusted provider who can show you how various types of injectables or similar procedures can help you attain the overall results that you really want. Performing the wrong type of procedure or injection on the wrong part of the mouth can cause embarrassment rather than boost your self-confidence.

Choosing the wrong treatment or the wrong cosmetic center can be the deciding factor in what the future of your lips look like. It’s best to do your research!

Combining Art and Science

At Southwest Plastic Surgery, we combine art and science together to create your specific lip augmentation or filler process. With a variety of injectables available, we are able to select ones that are most appropriate for adding volume, lifting the corners of your mouth, treating that gummy smile – and avoiding the “duck” look that just tells everyone else you’ve had something done. We’ve helped thousands of women just like you enjoy added confidence and beauty through minimally invasive lip procedures.

The types of injectables that we provide can help you enhance the contour of your lips for smoother, crease-free smiles and a youthful volume that may have diminished over the years. Dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are just a couple of options available that provide benefits over more conventional types of surgery.

Call our office today to schedule a consultation with our cosmetic and facial aesthetic specialists to see which option is best for your smile’s needs!

What Is Diastasis Recti?

Almost two-thirds of women suffer from diastasis recti (abdominal separation) during and following pregnancy. Women with diastasis recti can undergo tummy tuck surgery to correct it. A tummy tuck tightens the stomach muscles and removes excess abdominal fat and skin to improve the contour and tone of the abdomen.

An Explanation of Diastasis Recti

Diastasis recti means “separation of the rectus abdominis.” Essentially, the space between the left and right abdominal muscles widens to form a gap, causing a stomach pooch. This occurs because pregnancy places intense pressure on the abdominal muscles. For many women, the abdominal muscles cannot retain their shape due to the pressure, and they begin to separate. Diastasis recti is more likely to occur in women who are pregnant over age 35, are pregnant with multiples, or have more than one pregnancy, especially if the children are close in age.

How Diastasis Recti Can Affect You and Your Appearance

Diastasis recti during pregnancy leads to decreased muscle support, which may make a vaginal delivery more difficult. This condition may also cause constipation, a leaky bladder, lower back pain, and difficulty moving and breathing normally. While the muscle opening may shrink after giving birth, it never returns to normal for many women. Exercise may help to tone the abdominal muscles, but it can offer little in the way of correction of diastasis recti. In fact, some exercises that may seem beneficial, such as crunches, planks, or push-ups, can worsen the condition. Due to the separation between the stomach muscles, the stomach pooch may never fully go away. Some women with diastasis recti may look pregnant when they are not. Others may look pregnant after eating a big meal. Without correction, diastasis recti can leave your abdomen with a permanent pooch.

A Tummy Tuck Can Correct Diastasis Recti

Tummy Tuck Before and After PhotosThe best way to fully and completely correct diastasis recti is to undergo abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery). During a tummy tuck, the surgeon will tighten the abdominal muscles and pull them back to together as they should be. By doing so, the surgeon will erase the gap that formed and improve the tone of your abdomen. Additional benefits of a tummy tuck are the removal of excess abdominal skin, stretch marks, and fat after pregnancy. Tummy tuck surgery restores a more fit and toned abdomen and can completely resolve diastasis recti.

Our experienced plastic surgeons at Southwest Plastic Surgery have performed many successful tummy tuck procedures to correct diastasis recti. To schedule your consultation and find out more about how you could benefit from a tummy tuck, call our El Paso, TX office at (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form.

Non Surgical Abdomen Fat Reduction with Vanquish

Vanquish is an FDA approved fat reduction procedure that can help to eliminate the circumference of your abdominal area. The non-surgical treatment developed by BTL Industries uses selective radio frequency (RF) energy that works specifically to destroy the fat cells surrounding your abdominal areas.

Clinical studies show that Vanquish can eliminate 2 or more inches from your belly’s circumference and destroy up to 59% of the fat cells being treated – yet it’s completely safe for your skin! It’s great for tummy fat and bothersome love handles that bulge out at your waist or wrap around to your back.

The larger treatment surface allows you to complete your entire abdominal zone in just one appointment. This makes the process faster than other types of fat removal treatments – and it’s more affordable than you might think.Vanquish Before and AfterYour Vanquish Treatment at Southwest Plastic Surgery

Although you will feel a comfortable amount of warmth, the Vanquish treatment process is typically pain-free. No injections are necessary, there’s no downtime for recovery, and your appointment only takes about a half hour. It’s easy to squeeze in any day of the week. It’s one of the easiest and most comfortable ways for our patients to reduce the circumference of their waist.

For best results, most of our patients usually require about 4 separate Vanquish sessions before they reach their desired waistline. Sit back, relax, and we’ll do the rest! It’s a great alternative for people who are hesitant to have surgical or more invasive procedures done for fat removal or body contouring.

The device feels like a warm heating pad that is applied to the area we want to treat. Adjustable flaps on each side ensure your comfort while you lay back to take a nap or watch television.

Great for the Movie Stars and Great for You!

We typically recommend Vanquish for our patients who have a few areas here and there of unwanted fat or cellulite. As a safe, FDA approved fat treatment, it’s easier than ever to get the contour and smoothness that you’ve been working so hard toward with diet and exercise.

There are no risks involved, either to your skin or your underlying internal organs. RF technology targets only the fat cells in the area being treated. Some people may notice a bit of redness or sensitivity the day or two following their procedure, but that’s it. That’s why we break your recommended four visits up about one week apart for the overall fat-reduction treatment. In just one month, you can have an average of two inches taken off of your waistline!

Gain Confidence to Wear Your Favorite Clothes Again

In just a month you can be wearing your favorite jeans without having to worry about love handles any longer. Vanquish’s affordable fat-reducing technology means contoured waistlines for every budget. Our procedures cost between $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the number of sites being treated in our El Paso offices.

Boost your confidence, erase love handles, and get that flatter tummy for your swimsuit in just four relaxing Vanquish therapy visits. Find out more about the process by calling Southwest Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation!
